We now come to the main props on our gardening stage –
giving us an infinite variety of shapes, sizes, form and texture.
Apart from the minority of shrubs which have specific preferences
which will determine their siting and, of course, considerations of
colour association, one of the primary factors in planning is to
ensure a suitable balance between deciduous and evergreen plants – a
ratio of about two or three to one is generally appropriate, and
will ensure that form and interest are not lost during the
winter. (Most shrubs are
supplied in 1.5, 2 or 3 litre pots.)
